cycle tracks

Despite the fact that the fairly extensive network of cycle tracks is not well signposted and frequently hidden from view, it is nevertheless possible to cover a considerable distance by bike - once you’ve located a track’s head or tail.

For example, you can cycle – mostly on proper cycle tracks - much of the way from Feriolo on Lago Maggiore all the way to Domodossola, though certain sections still unfortunately unravel into confusion.

On the Piemonte western shore of Lago Maggiore, the creation of a connected network of cycle tracks is very much a work-in-progress, with the various ramshackle strands waiting to be joined up.

At Baveno, for example, you are likely to find yourself unexpectedly discharged into heavy oncoming traffic.

If you enjoy cycling along dedicated tracks in the mountains on relatively flat terrain, Santa Maria in Val Vigezzo fits the bill, especially on hot summer days when the valley’s altitude, at around 800 metres, takes the edge off the heat.

On the eastern, Lombardy shore, cycle tracks tend to be more visible and better maintained. For example the track inland from Luino is highly enjoyable and runs alongside a small river through fields.

The highlights on the eastern shore are interconnected circular routes around two lakes: Varese and Comabbio. Both great fun.

Mountain biking

If mountain biking is more your thing, you’ll find endless possibilities. In fact the whole area is criss-crossed by a vast network of tracks with the region between Lago Maggiore and Lago d’Orta particularly popular. Many mountain bike trails start in Colazza, next to the winter skating rink/summer sports centre. One great route takes you up to the ridge above Colazza and along it as far as Gignese, or even Mottarone.

There are many businesses renting out bikes, both traditional and electric, but one of the most reliable is NoWork in Arona.
